Originally a logging town, Mill Valley, CA takes its name from the sawmill located in Old Mill Park. A scenic railroad carried visitors up to the top of Mt. Tamalpais. The former railroad station is now a popular town square. The annual Dipsea foot race from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach takes place in June of each year. The Mill Valley Film Festival screens premier films. Muir Woods, a spectacular stand of old growth redwoods, is nearby. The Fall Arts Festival is held in Old Mill Park each September. Mill Valley real estate was mostly developed after World War II. Prior to then, it was a weekend retreat for San Franciscans. The hillside homes have a tranquil, woodsy setting.
